Jane Baskwill is the author of
three picture books: If Peace Is…(2003), Touch the Earth
(1999), and Somewhere (1996), Mondo Publishing, New York; a book
of rhymes for young children: Pass the Poems Please (1989),
Wildthings Press; Jane also has two poems, In Grandma’s Attic and
Pass the Poems Please, in an anthology edited by Sheree Fitch and
Anne Hunt, Whispers of Mermaids and Wonderful Things, Children’s
Poetry and Verse from Atlantic Canada, 2017, Nimbus Publishing. She
also has poems in other anthologies and, internationally, in reading
series. Jane completed a school-wide writing project that resulted in
the publication of a picture book: A Kid’s Guide to Making and Being
A Friend, used as a school fundraiser.
In addition
to an award-winning video series, Jane has authored many books and
articles for teachers and has developed materials for parents. Jane also
helps schools and communities start their own Family Literacy publishing
house. Publish It! has produced over 2000 non-fiction
photographic texts written by children and their parents/caregivers and
illustrated with photos they have taken.
Jane is a member of SCBWI and a
Gold member of Julie Hedlund’s 12x12 Picture Book Challenge. She is also
a participating author with the Nova Scotia Writers Federation Writers
in the Schools (WITS) program and is Counsellor East for IBBY Canada.
She attended Jane Yolen’s and Heidi Stemple’s Picture Book Boot Camp 6
and their Picture Book Boot Camp Redux. Jane also attended the
Highlights Foundation workshop, Getting to Know Your Picture Book, with
Debbie Ohi and Heidi Stemple and has taken The Children’s Book Academy
course, The Craft and Business of Writing Children’s Picture Books,
with Dr. Mira Reisberg and Kelly Delaney.
A former elementary teacher,
principal and teacher educator, Jane lives in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia
with her husband and two Great Danes.
